Arjun Ram Meghwal, born on December 20, 1953, is a prominent Indian politician currently serving as the Minister of Law and Justice in the Government of India since 2023. He also holds the positions of Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs since 2017 and Minister of State for Culture since 2021 in the Second Modi ministry. A member of the Bharatiya Janata Party, Arjun Ram Meghwal has a notable political career with various ministerial roles and parliamentary achievements.
Family and Education
Arjun Ram Meghwal was born to Lakhu Ram Meghwal and Hira Devi in the small village of Kishmidesar in Bikaner, Rajasthan. He pursued his education at Dungar College in Bikaner, obtaining a Master’s degree in Political Science, LLB, and MBA. Additionally, he has an IAS (Indian Administrative Service) background, having served in the Rajasthan Cadre. Meghwal is widely recognized as a representative of the Scheduled Caste community in Rajasthan.
Career Highlights
After completing his education, Meghwal embarked on a career in civil services. In 1982, he qualified the RAS Exams (Rajasthan Administrative Service Examinations) and was selected for the Rajasthan Udhyog Seva. He held various positions, including Assistant Director in the Jila Udhyog Kendra and General Manager of Jila Udhyog Kendra in different districts of Rajasthan.
Meghwal’s journey continued as he served as Officer on Special Duty to the Deputy Chief Minister of Rajasthan, Mr. Hari Shankar Bhabhra, and later became the State President of Rajasthan Udhyog Seva Parisad. His tenure in the Indian Administrative Service included roles such as Deputy Secretary of Technical Education, Special Secretary of Higher Education, Managing Director of Rajasthan Laghu Udhyog Nigam Limited, Additional Commissioner of the Commercial Tax Department, and District Collector and District Magistrate of Churu.
In 2009, Meghwal entered politics and successfully contested the general elections, becoming a Member of Parliament representing the Bhartiya Janata Party from the Bikaner Constituency. He was re-elected in the 2014 general elections for the 16th Lok Sabha. During his second term as an MP, he held the position of Chief Whip of the Bhartiya Janata Party in Lok Sabha and was also nominated as the Chairman of the House Committee by the Speaker of Lok Sabha.
Meghwal’s dedication and contributions led to his appointment as Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs and Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises in May 2019.
Personal Life
Arjun Ram Meghwal is married to Pana Devi, and together they have two sons and two daughters. Apart from his political engagements, he is known for his prowess in badminton. Notably, his cousin, Madan Gopal Meghwal, is also a politician associated with the Indian National Congress.
